OK…so it is about 10pm and I am in a small town called Boppard in the Rhine. We stopped at a hotel for the night and they have Internet. Did you know the keyboards are a little different in Germany…first of all, the Z and the Y keys are reverse, makes it difficult to type – also as everything is in German, all my words I type are showing up ‘spell check’ (so please excuse any typing errors as I CAN’T TELL WHAT IS A MISTAKE). There are also other differences which is making this five minute entry to more than thirty minutes.
Anyway…we had a fantastic day. We travelled to the Burg Eltz which is over 850 years old. It sits on a steep rock in one of the tributary rivers of the famous Moselle – admist one of Germany’s most unspoiled ancient wooded landscapes. Encircled by the river Elz, which gives its name to one of Germany’s most eminent noble families, Eltz Castle has been the family home of the Lords and Counts of Eltz for more than thirty generations. We had to park and hike in 1.3K to the Castle (I knew all those hiking trips would pay off). It was amazing and words cannot express what I saw. I was also amazed by the toilets of that century, apparently, they are able to flush by using rainwater from the roof and so everything flows down the side of the building (ick), you will understand when you see the pic as I will be able to post tomorrow when we are back home.
After, we headed to Cochem (Moselle River runs through it) where we walked around and did a bit of shopping. I ran into some Swans and tried to pet them – YES Tia, I am a loser…but MAN they were beautiful and very BIG and if I had food, they would have come right up to me. OK, just so you understand…I WOULD NOT do this with a tiger.
On our way to the Rhine, we passed under a really big bridge (which we are to drive on tomorrow – as it is the AutoBann) and after headed over to Boppard, where we enjoyed a delightful meal and now winding down for the evening.
It has been amazing and really tired, however, I just can’t stop myself so I must grab my coat and take a walk around before I head off to bed. It is just so beautiful here.
Tschüss
